I'm the only one reading this pile...although my girls would love to get ahold of these books early! Those two books (and Shadow Hawk) I'm saving for sixth grade to supplement our curriculum when we study Egypt. I keep telling my bookworms that if I don't save SOMETHING they won't have anything new to read when it's time!
I have the same problem with the Little Lady. If I don't hide the book I don't want her to read yet, she will go grab them and gobble them up.
I have them on our Egypt list as well. I am not sure if I will give it to her this Egypt go around or the next. (meaning Elem or Jr High) Still debating. Lately, I have had her go back and read some of the simple picture books that she never got. She missed a lot of them because she went from learning to read to jumping into encyclopedias. She never looked back. So, she missed some really great books!
Because the Little Man is taking reading slower, he isn't as much of a reader (as of yet), he is getting to explore some of those really great picture books as read alouds.
We have multiple bookshelves in our house: the ones in the kids' rooms they are free to read from at any time, the one in the "office" is strictly "for parents only", and the books on what my kids call "Mom's school box shelves" are by request only. The rule for those is if they have already read a book for school (including free-reading) they don't have to ask for permission to read it again, but if they haven't read a book yet, they know not to touch it! It helps that they know some of the books on that shelf are for when they get to highschool. :)
Sounds like your Little Lady reads like my oldest two girls (fast and all. the. time!) and your Little Man reads like my youngest daughter! Too funny! After two girls who read everything I gave them (and more!) I'm having to slow down with my third daughter and only assign the really important books for her to read...she's got a running (and growing!) list of books she can read whenever she gets to them. She loves biographies and history and "true books"...fiction is not her favorite!
Oh, yes, and regarding GG and Mara: I am happy to save them until my kids are older. In fact I almost wish I could put them off even longer! Not Golden Goblet so much as Mara...the little bit of romance in Mara makes me cringe to think of setting my will-be-11-year-olds loose on it. (Not so much the romance angle itself, but the awfully intense-for-impressionable-young-girls feelings described, even though they are brief.) I don't want my little girls thinking romance any sooner than they have to! (Song of Songs 2:7 has been echoing in my head all week!) That's my two cents :)

So how did they like "The Golden Goblet" and the "Daughter of the Nile?" I have it in my book case but haven't tossed it at my oldest yet.
